Does that mean Brutus, Mike and I are ON the hook for the inherent artistic value of this episode? There was no disclaimer alerting me to that.
Oh Heavens. The film version of A Handmaid's Tale is SO EXTREMELY BAD that I even told my students not to bother for cheating purposes, because it is so horrible they will want to kill themselves. I pointed out that the movie was so off-the-mark that they couldn't even cheat from it.
I guess it depends on the book/movie being discussed, hey? Fight Club was as good a movie as it was a book. Something like "The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" (I know. You would think that this would be a stupid book. But, in point of fact, it was a great and thought-provoking book.) was a fabulous book, but the movie was SUCK. It wasn't the same at all because often books have to be sanitized for a film audience. For example, "The Color Purple". The whole love story between Celie and Shug is glossed over as a "good friendship" because I guess same-sex relationships just weren't commercial enough for the studios. Hmm.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU CAN'T RESOLVE THE ISSUE OF GENDER TESTING ONCE AND FOR ALL ON YOUR SHOW? just kidding.

And I challenge anyone who feels "America" isn't one of the best songs in the history of the universe. Seriously. Thanks so much for playing it. :) (Unless you think that it isn't one of the best songs in the history of the universe, in which case I say "Don't do me any favours!" and scowl.)

PS- When you do your classical music influence show, you should maybe play Joy by Apollo 100 and The Lover's Concerto by one of many 1960s girl groups, both of whom jacked songs from Bach. But that's okay. I also have more suggestions, but I will tell you them later.

i would just like to say that I am very impressed with the content provided by your faithful listeners.... the music was particularly enjoyable and I will agree with brutus and say that that was one of the best intros to the show!
So, of course, if ASR explodes with popularity then we will all be taking a nice cut :)
I would just like to comment on the book before movie thing... I was chattin with Alissa and I was sayin that i like when i read a book before a movie because it allows me to have a bit more freedom in imagining the characters and the settings. If I see the movie first, I will always picture johnny depp or kate winslet or whomever as the character and not necessarily who i would've imagined. Though, after our discussion, i came to believe that this may be more true of fantasy or sci fi type stories. anyway, just my thought.
