S02 E23: Oh Little Fire

Has summer humidity permanently affixed you upon the couch?
Don't dreary doldrums, demanding docility, deserve defiance?
Doesn't the comedic law of thirds require another question here?

If you answered yes to any of these, you may want to look around and make sure nobody caught you talking to a computer. Also, you'll probably enjoy this week's episode; nothing like heady discussions of planning to light a fire under you!

Resilience is defined as "the capacity of an ecosystem to tolerate disturbance without collapsing into a qualitatively different state that is controlled by a different set of processes. A resilient ecosystem can withstand shocks and rebuild itself when necessary. Resilience in social systems has the added capacity of humans to anticipate and plan for the future."

Resilience is conferred in human and ecological systems by adaptive capacity.

So if one were to contrast this to "sustainability", would the latter depend on a system remaining stable?

Good evening Alissa and Tyler:

Although I very much appreciate the written comments you have both added on to this, I am afraid I must weigh in with the author of the third comment. "Sustainable development is to resilience as macro-economics is to microeconomics."

In all seriousness, it is difficult for the regular Joe/Josephine to feel they can have any meaningful impact when it comes to sustainable development. It all seems so grandiose. Whereas, we can all contribute on the small scale.

I have yet to see "Toy Story III", but my favourite animated film has to be "Madagascar I". The Chris Rock face on the zebra killed me!

We're under siege here in Toronto. Bring on the G50!!
