UAE flight attendants, helicopter engined power boats, outlandish foodstuffs, and seedy hotels!!! Luckily your paths do not cross too often as the effects could be devastating. For example, just think of Allissa attending her eagerly anticipated Arts & Crafts event last weekend at Fort York. It's a Fort after all! Tyler's troop, all sporting hair shirts, could have been there at the same time carrying out a re-enactment and sweating like pigs. It would have been a disaster in the making.

I am learning all sorts of things through ASR. My vocabulary is increasing by leaps and bounds. Here is a sample. "I caused quite an embroglio when I dressed as a mandrill during this year's purim".

I am curious if Alissa's in-laws are any relation to a George Tomlinson, who was a prominent leader in the pulp and paper industry?

Take care

BrutusWilliam Roberthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15302999668196866394noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-440587638565682021.post-60876657714901058972013-06-10T22:36:10.566-04:002013-06-10T22:36:10.566-04:00Thank you both for a lovely evening. I like your Montreal Tourist "Plan B" talk Tyler, and Alicia I learned about criteria for granting building permits, especially in the context of your discussion.

I could also relate to that bit about comedians and the feeling I get sometimes that I am not supposed to be as cool, as perceptive or as informed as the performer is. It can feel like those times at a wedding when speeches have inside jokes that only a select few, in this case only the comedian himself, are privy too.
QCVThttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00277279037726845840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-440587638565682021.post-2746334064791129642013-06-09T23:02:16.964-04:002013-06-09T23:02:16.964-04:00You are so right about expecting some routines wit...You are so right about expecting some routines with classes. Routines, or as Alissa says, a "framework", leaves everyone with time and energy to address the interesting stuff. Flexible routines that can allow for all sorts of creativity and growth. Some people like to call this classroom management rather than discipline because good classroom (or museum trip) management decreases, or removes, the need to discipline. More politically correct too, I guess.

There are some who think asking kids to line up is insulting to kids who have no need to line up at home etc. I think common sense comes into it. Have rules where needed, when they make things smoother for everyone, and invite kids to help make the rules, where it makes sense. Nothing more than that.

It seems nowadays parents let their kids choose their own clothing too. I notice that all these kids look like they work at Cirque de Soleil so I got talking with a few others. This is the new thing with parenting. I have no trouble with it sometimes as it is a harmless place to give kids choices, in many places. But I think kids need to learn that
all through life we need to dress appropriately and often differently for various occasions. With little ones i like the, "Do you want to wear this blue top or this red one?" choice. Wearing a tutu everywhere seems a bit like being afraid to ask kids to line up for fear of not respecting their freedom.

(Tyler's) MomTylerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08283127265098416824noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-440587638565682021.post-51549394781703467432013-05-29T18:42:48.411-04:002013-05-29T18:42:48.411-04:00Hello A & T:

Is the theme of this episode's music "drugs"?
The Smiths have such off-the-wall lyrics. Nevertheless, their songs are still catchy! Try the tune: "The Boy with the thorn in his side".

Went to the Montreal Mosiac site and tried it out. It is a splendid way to learn about the history of various districts of the city, including the south shore (e.g., the original train station of Laprairie.)

It is too bad about BIXI. I have the answer. Tyler...Most enjoyable episode!

I have the answer. Tyler should buy Alissa a balaclava for Christmas. That way she can be warm, yet trés chic!!

As for Hamilton, the city could do what Brampton has done for winter entertainment. While Brampton does not get enough prolonged cold weather to have an outdoor hockey rink, it does has a refrigerated trail in a downtown park for public skating outside. Yes, it is also called Gage Park. Beautiful spot, and it keeps operating until mid-March.

Over the years I have gotten used to the cold of winter. Even the snow does not get me down. The most depressing part is the overwhelming amount of darkness. People seem to hibernate from 4 p.m. until 7 a.m. That is what is so amazing about the Nuit Blanche event, it makes you enjoy winter, and appreciate a full day of activities.

Your thoughts on the themes of modern day movies were spot-on.

Looking forward to the next show.
Brutus

p.s. I doubt I can talk about this episode without straying from the point, so I’m going to keep it fairly brief:

You played that folk piece from Quebec and I realised I’ve been neglecting the Breton side of traditional Celtic music. This is terrible. I’m going to fix it.

I was surprised to really appreciate your gospel picks, and I’m always happy to hear an upbeat song with a dark theme to contrast, as in “Poor Ellen Smith”. I actually quite liked those three sets of sister ensembles you put back–to–back there. Well selected, I think.

As a last note relating directly to the playlist, I’m going to find and listen to the entire Robert Plant & Alison Krauss album because of ASR.

It was acknowledged in a previous episode of ASR that it’s become rare for either of you to introduce your tracks before playing them (except in the case of theme episodes like this one), but I enjoyed listening to Tyler’s views on these so much that I’d like to hear you bring that segment back every now and then, and to verbally stand behind the idea of a theme episode that involves presenting the songs that roused your interest in particular artists.

I think it’s safe to say that Tyler is more than capable of doing a show all on his own. But it’s not Awkward Silences without someone to make awkward silences with.Mandahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09636326019779147022noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-440587638565682021.post-38450529657482698072012-11-21T19:34:30.482-05:002012-11-21T19:34:30.482-05:00Tyler: Your knowledge of music and music history ...Tyler: Your knowledge of music and music history never ceases to amaze me. And the Lullaby by the King's Singers did Billy Joel proud!

While my distaste of the Disco era was legendary, you might try on The Three Degrees rendition of "When Will I See You Again?". It's quite different from most songs made at that time. The trio sing great in unison, but also in the harmony sections.

And the thing I always appreciated about most of the songs performed by America was that they featured splendid harmonies both in their vocals and on the 3 acoustic guitars.

Thank you!

BrutusWilliam Roberthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15302999668196866394noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-440587638565682021.post-64273348613152465742012-11-07T22:24:59.408-05:002012-11-07T22:24:59.408-05:00There is no lack of subject matter for urban plann...There is no lack of subject matter for urban planners, that is for sure!

I was not aware that the H.M.S.
