Oooh, I just happened to check on good old Awkward Silences just as you posted something newwwwwwww.

...If the first song is any indication, earworms are in the eye (ear?) of the beholder. I simply love the song "Runaround Sue", but I can't say that it gets stuck in my head.

Goddamn. I am going to be singing the freaking "Lion Sleeps Tonight" for DAYS now... And "Sugar Sugar". Annnnnd most of the songs you are playing after this one.

TW, what were some of the songs that they played on the Randy Bachman show again? They DID play "Mah Na Mah Na", which is absolutely CLASSIC. Also (=AMAZING, in a horrible type of way) "Ra-Ra-Rasputin", which launched me into the tale of seeing Rasputin outside CTV... (For real.)And some truly horrible country-type song. "Mellow Yellow".

Ewwww.... when you look up Rasputin on wikipedia there is a picture of him dead with bulletholes through his head and that's pretty terrible.

...why did you have to mention the Halloween parties of yore? I actually cringed and buried my face in my hands when I heard it.

If you did a Saint show, the only song I can think of to play is "Dominique". (Of "Dominique-nique-nique s'en allait tout simplement" fame.)

You know what is my earworm as of late? "Baby Come Back" by Hall & Oates. Funny story. Its an earworm because one of my students in Grade Nine, Colin, has decided that this should be my theme song and the whole freaking class has decided to sing it to me about 10 times a class. They all launch into "Baby come back! You can blame it all on me! I was wrong, and I just can't live without you!!!" and then I say, "Thanks, Guys." and laugh it off and then one of them, usually Colin but it can be any one of the usual suspects, will shout out "I LOVE YOU, MISS!" and then they'll all shout "WE LOVE YOU, MISS!" and, although annoying, it really makes me laugh. And then I go home and the song plays in my mind for hours.

Check this out. Very neato. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/musicminds/

Okay, I just HOWLED with laughter like a maniac all alone in my apartment at Tyler's "funkalicious supafly" "bow pa bow pa BOWWWWW" and was so excited to hear it a second time. Classic.

By the way, I know you guys don't do classical music on Awkward Silences, but I think "Bolero" by Maurice Ravel deserves a place of honor on the earworms list.

PS- Loved this episode and don't hate you.

Fantastic comments Kristen!

Correction:

Daft Punk's video for 'Around the World' was directed by another famous video director turned film director, Michel Gondry. (Leave it to the French)

To our defense, Daft Punk's other famous video for 'Da Funk' WAS directed by Spike Jonze.

Kristen, where were you on that one?

I assumed you were right and didn't think to look it up?

Congratulations you two!!! You're now officially Golden Gaels Alumni!

Wonderful episode. However, it took me years, and in some cases decades, to deprogram my brain from replaying some of these tunes. Now, they're back!

On my 60's short list was the lead guitar solo from the Rolling Stones, "I Can't Get No Satisfaction". Then in the 70's we had "Hot Popcorn" and "MacArthur Park".

The 80's: Try listening just once to "Hocus Pocus" by Focus. Then there were "Sleeping Satellite" and "You Only Get What You Give" from the 90's.

From the 2000's, how about Say It Right.

Cheers,
Brutus
